Hip Hop Intensive

Summer in L.A. The Hip Hop Intensive is open to dancers 13 years to adult including dance teachers worldwide. This is not just a Hip Hop Intensive as dancers can train in other dance styles at the studios.

Summer in L.A. includes all of the following and so much more...

Dance Classes and Private Workshops

  • All private workshops are customized to suit dancers styles/levels and needs and feature industry chat's and Q & A's, autograph signing sessions and photo taking opportunities.  The music used at the private workshops is conscious Hip Hop. As most mainstream music is not, it is our goal to uplift and inspire dancers through positive alternatives.
  • Private group Master Classes with the industry’s hottest instructors including 'So You Think You Can Dance', America's Best Dance Crew, Michael Jackson 'This is It', The Groovaloos choreographers and dancers and many others at International Dance Academy, on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame, where America’s Best Dance Crew is shot. Classes include old school and new school Hip Hop, Street Jazz, Jazz Funk, Music Video Hip Hop, Krump, Lock, Pop and Breaking.  Choreographers are TBA but include Matt Cady, Beat Breaks, Blue Print Crew, Gigi Torres, The Groovaloos, Poe One, Misha Gabriel and more.
  • Private group Master Class with Grover Dale who "is the man with all of the answers for dancers!" - CBS-TV NEWS Hand-picked by Nigel Lythgoe to coach season 7 finalists of So You Think You Can Dance, now the Summer in L.A. dancers will be coached by this Tony Award winning choreographer, director and industry veteran. If you long for the secrets to booking dance jobs and learning about the industry, this is the opportunity for you. This is the only master class he will be teaching this year.

  • Waakin’, Punkin’ and Posin’ “Shway Style” workshop with Shabba-Doo. As Shabba-Doo will be shooting his dance film Battle for the Streets and Breakin` 3, he is in search of new talent. This is not a choreography workshop but a workshop on the fundamentals and foundations of street dance. In addition to the workshops, he will also teach dancers about performance, the industry and so much more. You will be working with a living legend.
  • Music Video Hip Hop workshop with JJ Villar, voted top Summer in LA choreographer and mentor for two years in a row. JJ will also inspire and educate dancers about dance and the industry
  • Urban Moves workshops in Vegas hosted by the Hip Hop Championships where you will take three classes with top Hip Hop choreographers including Shotyme (Black Eyed Peas, Gwen Stefani) Boogaloo Sam (The Electric Boogaloos) and Napoleon & Tabitha (So You Think You Can Dance judges and choreographers).
  • Industry lectures may cover topics including: learn to be a professional at all times, market yourself in a positive way, fitness and nutrition, type casting and body image in dance and the industry, self esteem and confidence, stay safe and sane in Hollywood’s tough and competitive game and learn to be true to yourself and not get lost in Hollywood
  • Classes at three of L.A’s top dance studios where you will select the styles, levels and choreographers of your choice. In addition to Hip Hop and urban dance classes, you may choose if you wish classes such as ballet, contemporary, jazz and more.
  • Spend a full day taking classes at Millennium, considered L.A’s studio to the stars as seen on MTV. All classes are taught by working performers and choreographers with extensive personal experience in the performing arts and their willingness to bring out the best in the students
  • Master Class at Millennium with one of the industry’s best TBA
  • Some of Millennium’s Master Class faculty includes Mia Michaels (Celine Dion, Cirque Du Soleil), Wade Robson (2 time Emmy award winner for So You Think You Can Dance choreography), Tony Testa (Janet Jackson, Aaron Carter) and Kevin Tancharoen (Fame, Britney Spears)
  • Some of Millennium’s choreographers include Misha Gabriel (Janet Jackson, Omarion), Nick Bass (Justin Timberlake, Prince, Janet Jackson), Shotyme (Gwen Stefani, Black Eyed Peas), Brooklyn, Donyelle (So You Think You Can Dance), Mihran (Madonna, Ricky Martin), Super Dave (Beyonce, Mya, Justin Timberlake), Kennis (Honey, Ludacris) Nick Lanzisera (Fame, High School Musical 2 & 3) and Marty Kudelka (Justin Timberlake, Janet Jackson, Pink)
  • Take classes at Debbie Reynolds where the instructors are some of the best in the business. Options include Hip Hop, Funk, House, Popping & Locking and Krumping. Jazz, Contemporary and other styles are also available.  Although this studio is open only to dancers 17 years +, if you are part of Summer in L.A., you will be able to attend even though you may not meet the age criteria.
  • The friendly and relaxed atmosphere at Debbie Reynolds has attracted many celebrities throughout the years, such as Lucille Ball, Michael Jackson, Madonna, Bette Midler, Cher, Usher and Mariah Carey. It has been a popular rental facility for many of the most renowned choreographers in the business, including Travis Payne, Rob Marshall, Vincent Patterson, Brian Friedman and Shawnette Heard. Choreographers have taught globally and have choreographed for numerous artists including Janet Jackson, Missy Elliot, Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, Beyonce and many more. The instructors come from all around the world and their impressive training background ranges from Alvin Ailey to The Brooklyn Ballet to the "Streets"

  • Take classes at The Edge with some of the industry’s best teachers and professionals. Options include Hip Hop, Breakin’, Street, Jazz Funk, Movement for Actors, Stretch & Strengthening, Belly Dancing, Salsa and more. Levels range from beginners to professional. Classes are held by renown Hollywood teachers who train and choreograph today’s leading dancers and entertainers. The teachers work with entertainers such as Madonna, Janet Jackson, Destiny’s Child, Michael Jackson, Prince, TLC, Britney Spears, Jennifer Lopez, the Backstreet Boys, Ricky Martin and many more. They have appeared in hundreds of music videos, commercials, TV shows, films and stage productions and companies including American Ballet Theatre, the Joffrey Ballet, the Cleveland Ballet and the Tokyo Ballet company.

  • Network with industry decision makers, choreographers, stars & back up dancers. In addition to the star choreographers, dancers and agents that Summer in L.A. dancers have met, past dancers have also met Marques Houston, Mya and Carmit Bachar of the Pussy Cat Dolls.   • Have intimate and interactive experiences at all private workshops with industry chats, Q & A’s, autograph signing sessions and photo taking opportunities.
  • Optional photo shoot with Lee Cherry, photographer to Hollywood’s top performing artists including the Pussy Cat Dolls, choreographer Brian Friedman and actress Jenna Dewan (Step Up, Take The Lead). Lee has also worked professionally as a dancer and is also a producer and director.

    In the past, Lee invited Carmit Bachar (former Pussy Cat Dolls) and other special guests to stop by the shoot for a meet and greet, industry chat and photo taking opportunities. Carmit’s industry experience includes the films 13 Going on 30, Along Came Polly and Good Burger. She was the ‘Livin’ La Vida Loca’ woman in Ricky Martin’s world tour and also toured with No Doubt, Beyonce and Janet Jackson. She appears in numerous videos including Aaliyah’s ‘Rock The Boat’, Beyonce’s ‘Crazy In Love’ & ‘Baby Boy’ and the Black Eyed Peas ‘Shut Up’.
  • Photo shoot hair and make up stylists are top working professionals in the industry.  In 2009, Sutan, top stylist of America's Next Top Model styled the Summer in L.A. dancers
  • Meet top US immigration lawyer Kevin Levine who specializes in helping dancers obtain their US work status. Be Discovered referred Tre Armstrong (Missy Elliott), Jae Blaze (Dream Girls) and Janet Castillo (Jennifer Lopez), who he assisted to obtain what they required to be able to legally work in the U.S. and be signed by top L.A. agents
  • Chaperones are mature, professional child care providers to rock stars, celebrities, corporate presidents and normal everyday people.  They are Trustline Registered and CPR and First Aid Certified

Auditions and Shows

  • Be part of the live studio audience of the #1 hit dance show ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ in the front rows and on the podiums and get to see performances by special guests. Past artists have included Lady Gaga, LL Cool J and the Dream, Mika and Busta Rhymes and the JabbAWockeeZ. It is also the elimination show so two dancers will be sent home.
  • Interested dancers will be considered for “Shabba-Doo’s” Battle for the Streets, a film by David Winters (West Side Story), filming in Los Angeles over the summer. This is an opportunity of a lifetime. This film is looking for dancers from all over the world.
  • Attend other auditions and/or work on a live set if you fit the type being cast. In 2004, the dancers attended Christina Aguilera auditions and in 2005, some of the dancers were background performers on the feature film Walk The Talk. In 2007, Marques Houston sat in on a class looking for dancers and scouted Talia Adler-Magat who was invited to audition for him and for You Got Served director Chris Stokes. In 2008, TLC’s 10 Years younger was being shot live on location at the Hollywood Highland Mall during our sightseeing outing. Diana and some of the dancers were asked to be a part of the taping.
  • Finale Showcase where you perform the choreography learned for top choreographers, dancers, agents and casting directors.
  • Mock Hip Hop Auditions with a top artistic director/choreographer to learn audition etiquette, how to pick up Hip Hop choreography quickly at dance auditions, work on controlling your nerves and improving your self-esteem and confidence
  • Attend the World Locking battle where you will see the best lockers in the world compete. That will be followed by the World Popping battle where the best poppers in the world will also compete. To end the World battles, watch the bboy/bgirl 3 on 3 battle. This is the 1st year that there will be a 3 on 3 battle.
  • Watch Hip Hop crews from Canada, the US and worldwide battle on the floor at the finals of the World Hip Hop Championships on the Vegas strip at the Red Rock Resort.  All the battles including this event is produced by Hip Hop International, producers of America's Best Dance Crew. This is like watching the show except with crews from all over the world.

Sightseeing and Fun

  • Travel to Los Angeles, the entertainment capitol of the world from your hometown. You can come on your own as the program is chaperoned or you can join us with your family. Your family will be able to join us on some of our outings including the Vegas road trip
  • Spend an incredible week surrounded by new friends from all over the world, who share your passion – dance
  • Choreographers, back up dancers and other stars are invited to join us on our outings. Past programs have featured actor Dayo Ade (Degrassi, Lost) and Duece the prince of krump (Chris Brown, Janet Jackson, So You Think You Can Dance), Ben Allen (Rent, Scrubs) and JJ Villar (Usher, JLO)  
  • Professional guided tour of L.A hot spots including Hollywood's Walk of Fame, The Chinese Theatre, Beverly Hills and Bel-Air.  See your favourite stars homes including Michael Jackson's.
  • Shopping trip and lunch at The Grove during the lunch break of the SYTYCD taping
  • Outing to Universal Studios Citywalk for shopping and sightseeing to wrap up the L.A experience
  • Travel to Las Vegas, Nevada in a private chartered bus to watch crews from Canada, the US and worldwide battle on the floor at the finals of the World Hip Hop Championships
  • On the way to Vegas, stop for some great discounted shopping at the Fashion Outlets
  • In Vegas, celebrate the Hip Hop Championships in all ages party with live DJ and dancing or just hang out and watch the fun.  This party will be after the Hip Hop Championships.  This event is exclusive to the competing crews only, but as a Summer in LA dancer, you will be able to attend the party.

  • Airport transfers: LAX airport arrival and Vegas McCarren departure
